Vineyard and Winemaking Activities

Pruning
Leaf pulling/thinning
Educating guest on result of various pruning and thinning techniques
Trellising vines
Weeding
Pest / disease control
Showing guest the different types of grapes and vines and how they grow
Educating guest on how the decisions are made about what grapes or other fruit to grow and where on the property to grow different types of grapes/fruit
Showing irrigation techniques
General vineyard care and maintenance, and fence care if applicable
Harvesting (picking) Grapes
Sorting grapes
Grape crushing; stem removal
Crushed grapes, juice, skins, and seeds are put into a tank or for whites; grapes pressed, skins removed, juice into tanks
Adding Yeasts
Educating guest on Fermentation (malolactic fermentation, etc.)
Cap of skins is pushed down or pumped over the fermenting liquid
Educating guest on how different barrel and tank techniques and aging produce various results
Wine color techniques: Wine is pressed off the skins or for whites, wine is left to sit in contact with the lees if necessary
Caring for barrels; may include "Stirring the barrels"
Racking and/or barreling of wine.  May include riddling for sparkling wines
Barrel / tank clean out, removal of skins, etc
Educating guest on determining when fermentation is complete
Barrel tasting
General care and maintenance of barrels, tanks and winery equipment
Fining and/or filtering (includes cleaning filters in prep for bottling)
Blending wine
Preparing bottles for bottling
Bottling and corking the wine
Educating guest on developing labels, including graphics and information on various labels. Required information on labels.  Understanding wine labels.
Labeling the bottles
Packing of wine in cases, and storage of the cases
Working the tasting room; pouring, discussing wines, prep and clean-up
Wine tasting with the wine maker. Tasting techniques and understanding the wines being tasted
